Peruvian Travels: Introduction

Do you even journal, bro??

Sup y’all!

(fun li’l aside: yallidarity is probably my favorite leftist unification synonym but I’m not from the south so I can’t really say it without feeling like I’m patronizing…)

Anyway, I’m rambling and it’s only been four lines of text (shiiiiiiit). I’m trying to keep this fun and lighthearted but that doesn’t mean that these words come without purpose.

So now what the fuck am I here to share with you today?????

Well, I’ve got some tasty stories for you my good children.

During the summer of 2016 in the year of our Lord (bless the fuck up, bitches), I had the fortune of traveling to Peru with my good pal Rohan.

Introduced to one another on move-in day of Freshman year, in what formed two-thirds of our suite’s undisputed best triple (hiiiiii Kevin), we grew to become good friends as evident from the photo below.

Though we weren’t proactive in capitalizing on the opportunities to study abroad provided to us by our university, we still longed to see a part of the world beyond familiar borders.

We originally planned to visit Iceland (if you count saying “hey, we should go to Iceland” as a plan) because crazy cheap one-way flights were being offered from LAX and SFO. But we were too late to the punch and the deals weren’t as good no mo’. When we realized a trip to the European island was going to be an economic undertaking we both weren’t particularly keen on, our sights immediately narrowed onto the nation home to the legendary Machu Picchu.

From August 13th through September 1st, we journeyed. It was a grand experience and one which I’ve felt compelled to share since I returned stateside.

Over a year later, I’m finally forcing myself to take the time to write out these stories. I don’t remember each day as crisply as I did a year ago but I’ve got my journal to help jog my memory.

At the end of each adventure, I would write down my thoughts on the events that transpired before they could fade into abstract memory at the beginning of the next one. I wasn’t too detailed in my daily notations but I certainly aimed to capture the gist of what made each moment throughout the day special.

I’m hoping that this is enough to put myself back into the same headspace I was in when I sat on a hostel bed or at the breakfast table and penned my original thoughts. It’s been a good eight months since I last read through the journal and I’m excited to revisit past memories if nothing more than for the enjoyment of others.

Each subsequent blog post will consist of a single day’s journal entry and will be accompanied by a profusion of photographs (that means a lot of pics, yo). I’ll try to keep it as cajj and lighthearted as my mood allows.

Power stances, only

I tend to usually think of myself as a cautious and calculated person — one who prefers to plan fun rather than spontaneously go along with the whims of those around me. But some of these tales cast serious doubt upon that narrative.

I’m not sure how much detail I’m going to provide with some of the more socially taboo experiences. But from buying drugs in a park filled with cats to getting kissed by middle aged Peruvian women on a tour boat, hiking out of the deepest canyon in the Americas at 4am, and calling an Uber solo just to head across town to meet up with a girl I met on the internet for a quick shag — you can’t pretend you’re not at least slightly curious.

Stay tuned!
